主讲人简介

Dr Yan Ying, PhD in American Studies; Fellow of Higher Education Academy (UK).

Dr Yan Ying teaches translation studies and directs the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies at the University of Leicester, UK. She has published on Chinese American literature, Chinese immigrant writing, and autobiographical writing and translation, in journals such as Translation and Literature, Meta: Translator’s Journal, Modern Languages Studies and Journal of American Studies. Her current research interest is memory and translation. She is also an active literary translator. 

讲座内容

Over the last three decades, both Translation Studies and Memory Studies have been recognised as contemporary ‘boom areas’ in the humanities. However, only the recent contribution from Translation Studies to the Holocaust Studies points to the significance of the intersection of these two fields. 

This talk will introduce how we can look at some of the issues in translating memory between English and Chinese. I will present two cases. One is the Chinese translation of an autobiographical writing by an English author, Martin Amis’s Experience, which features remembering as manifested in multiple temporalities and multiple selves. The other is the English translation of a Chinese novel about a national trauma, Yan Geling’sJinling Shisan Chai (《金陵十三钗》) which presents memory of trauma through its narrative form and structure. The talk will give you some insights into research in this budding area of translation and memory. We will also discuss the implications for your translation practice.
